Evolution of our thinking on data in Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, the education data landscape has continued to grow and expand, with the government focusing on using data for decision-making now more than ever. Since the launch of the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) programme in 2018, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education and the Teaching Service Commission have prioritised collecting and using this data to improve education across the country. Here, the Sierra Leone country leadership team at EdTech Hub looks at how data in Sierra Leone has evolved to where it is now and what needs to be done to create a sustainable education data ecosystem.

We define education data as any information that relates to an education system. This ranges from data on individual students, teachers and schools to data on learning outcomes.

We have created a short video that addresses the following questions about the data landscape in Sierra Leone;

  • What does the education data landscape look like in Sierra Leone?
  • What principles should the government follow to improve data systems in Sierra Leone?
  • What steps have the government and partners taken to start unifying the education data ecosystem?
  • Beyond a unified data system, what else do we need in place to support data-driven decision-making?
  • What factors affect data-driven decision-making in Sierra Leone?

We hope this video gives an insight into the education data landscape in Sierra Leone and how things are evolving.
